EMDR
What is EMDR Therapy?
Unlike traditional psychotherapy, EMDR therapy does not require you to talk it out or rehash traumatic experiences. This evidence based approach to treatment jump starts the brain’s natural healing process.
When a person experiences a traumatic event, their brain can go off-line, which may result in a disconnect between what they feel, hear, and see. Sometimes the brain doesn’t store things in a way that allows healing. Thus, your brain believes there is still a present danger.
EMDR helps remove the yuck that has been stuck in your brain and body over time. Many clients at Belonging and Healing Therapy suffer from anxiety disorders, acute stress disorder, post traumatic stress disorder, and adjustment disorder. EMDR therapy helps them heal.
Sessions are 60-90 minutes in length.
EMDR Intensives
Oftentimes people have tried talk therapy to resolve past traumatic experiences and have not been able to get to the root of the issue. We work together with you to create a treatment plan.
Traditional therapy and single-session EMDR therapy allows for 60-90 minute sessions. These brief sessions often do not allow enough time to achieve the desired breakthrough.
Together we decided on your treatment plan – a one day, three day or five day program to use EMDR to process traumatic material. By concentrating the therapy into a few consecutive days, people accomplish more healing and find relief in a shorter amount of time.
Benefits of EMDR Intensives:
- Rapid relief of symptoms. People often experience quicker alleviation of symptoms.
- Sessions can be completed in a one day, three day, or five day format. This allows you more flexibility in your weekly schedule.
- Although the upfront cost associated with EMDR intensive is higher, it can be more cost-effective in the long run by reducing the number of therapy hours over the years.
- An EMDR Intensive may require fewer total hours of therapy than weekly sessions stretched over months or years. A single day of intensive EMDR can be equivalent to several weeks of traditional therapy.

- You have experienced a one-time traumatic event that causes havoc in your daily life.
- You are a healthcare worker who worked during the COVID-19 pandemic.
- You are in regular therapy sessions and feel like you have been talking in circles and haven’t found your relief!
- You are an overachieving perfectionist, performer, and pleaser, and want to stop these patterns of behavior in your professional and personal life.
Facts about EMDR Intensive:
Therapists practicing through an intensive format do not skip any of the EMDR phases.
EMDR Phases 1-2, history taking and preparation, are all about assessing your readiness for EMDR, learning about your history/symptoms, teaching you about your nervous system, and helping you learn how to regulate your nervous system through coping skills. We do not move on to trauma reprocessing until phases 1-2 are sufficiently complete. We work with the pace your nervous system can sustain
